UPCOMING EVENTS

Tai Mitchell Junior Rugby Competition (for year 7/ 8 players or Under 13’s)

Tai Mitchell was a noted elder of the Te Arawa tribe in the 1900s. In the Rotorua district, all hui and public events of any importance were organised under his guidance and he was recognised as an authority on the welfare and progress of the Maori people. He was also a prominent figure in in local body politics, business and farming. Tai lived at Ohinemutu village on the shores of Lake Rotorua but travelled widely as a surveyor for the Native Land Court and the Lands and Survey Department. He first saw his wife Te Aomihi while surveying near Atiamuri; the Mihi Bridge over the Waikato River at Atiamuri was named after her. The couple had 11 children, and the close ties between parents and offspring eventuated in many of Tai's children building their own family homes in the village. The Mitchells are still prominent residents there today. Tai was an active sportsman who played bowls, bet on horse racing and played rugby.

Tai Mitchell died in 1944. He was 67. The rugby shield named in his honour was first awarded in 1938; and over the years the Tai Mitchell tournament has become an annual rugby tradition for hundreds of Year 7/8 schoolboys or Under 13’s from around the Bay of Plenty.

The 2011 competition will be held at Edgecumbe from 15th to 20th July with teams from Whakatane, Opotiki, Galatea, Rangitaiki, Tauranga West, Tauranga East, Rotorua Gold, Rotorua Maroon, Te Puke and Apanui.
