Junior High Performance

The main aim of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Junior High Performance Academy program is to develop players to meet the demands of both higher level rugby (Mitre 10 Cup, Super Rugby, All Blacks) as well as achieving off field success. Players selected for the program will typically be eligible for the Bay of Plenty Rugby U19 side in the first year of the programme. They will have been identified as having the required skill set and most importantly the personal characteristic to achieve their rugby goals.

Bay of Plenty Rugby have created different ‘Modules’ players will look to complete during the two year program. These ‘Modules’ are based on the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) 6 Pillar Development Model and includes:

  1. Technical Modules: Catch & Pass, Tackle, Running Lines, Positional Specific
  2. Tactical Modules: Understanding your role, game plan, leadership, rugby laws
  3. Physical Modules: Aerobic fitness, speed, power, strength
  4. Nutrition Modules: General, pre & pptraining/game, individual needs, hydration, supplements
  5. Mind Skills Modules: Routines, mindfulness, visualisation, dealing with pressure
  6. Professional Development Modules: Not limited too - rugby & career planning, budgeting & nutrition, investing, coaching courses & more.

Player Attributes

Below are a few key characteristics we are looking for in players that we believe will contribute to a successful rugby career:

  • Work Ethic – Good understanding of hard work
  • Rugby Talent – Solid technical & tactical understanding of the game
  • Physical Talent – Fitness, speed, power
  • Life Balance – Study or career focus outside of rugby
