Bay of Plenty Men’s Sevens’ Head Coach Paul Tietjens and Bay of Plenty Women’s Sevens’ Head Coach Victoria Grant have named their respective teams to play in this Saturday’s Northern Region Sevens Qualification Tournament in Cambridge.
The Bay of Plenty Men's Sevens team selected this weekend will be playing for pool position in the Bayleys National Sevens. Head coach Tietjens will be handing the reins over to Assistant Coach Euan Mackintosh for the weekend, while he is away with the Samoan Sevens side in Cape Town.
Mackintosh highlighted the need to finish in a strong place to put them in good stead for the upcoming Bayleys National Sevens.
“This weekend’s objective is to first and foremost get the best placing as possible for January’s tournament and behind that for us to keep progressing. We have been training for a couple of months now and we want to keep building and progressing on that,” said Mackintosh.
Mackintosh finishes enthused his side will be playing an exciting brand of rugby this weekend.
“Everyone sees Bay of Plenty as the home of sevens and it is extremely important to us that we demonstrate a good brand of sevens rugby.”
The Bay of Plenty Women’s Sevens side captained by New Zealand Development Sevens player Rebecca Kersten is a youthful side who will thrive off the challenge presented this weekend.
Head Coach Victoria Grant is confident the leadership within her team will be a key attribute to their success for this weekend.
“We have a lot of young girls in this weekend’s side; however they are exceptionally talented and are up for the challenge. We still have a strong core group from last year and we believe these girls will provide them with the leadership they need to perform at the next level.” said Grant.
Grant continued acknowledging the importance the team’s preparation will play to achieving success this weekend.
“Our squad has been training and playing well over the past six weeks which is a testament to our team culture on and off the field,” finished Grant.
