In the celebration of Club Rugby the Steamers ran out in hand with fifteen Junior Club Rugby players following the Junior Club Rugby March past involving over 1,200 kids from across the Bay of Plenty to claim a 46-17 victory over the Hawke’s Bay Magpies.

Ten minutes into the first half the Steamers attack saw Hawke’s Bay’s defence wavier, with several penalties in a row, referee James Doleman went to his pocket, awarding a yellow card for Hawke’s Bay’s Pauri Rakete-Stones.

Moments later the Steamers persistence was rewarded with tight head prop Siegfried Fisi’ihoi driving over the line, Mike Delany faultless with the boot converted the extras seeing the Steamers take an early 7-0 lead.

A lazy penalty from the Steamers allowed Hawke’s Bay Ihia West to get his side on the board; however it would be their only points of the half.

The remainder of the half went the Steamers way first with a superb break from Monty Ioane, allowing the Steamers to swing the ball wide through their backs to find Lalakai Foketi across the try line in their second try of the match. Delany outstanding with the boot seamlessly converted the try from the side-line.

Two consecutive penalties allowed Delany to push the Steamers out to a 20-3 lead at the break.

Hawke’s Bay half back Marino Mikaele Tu'u crossed early in the second half allowing West to add the extras to cut the Steamers lead to 10.

Both sides fought back and forth following the try, with neither team letting up. But it was Steamers who scored next with Joe Webber crossing the line in style. Delany converted again to push out the lead to 27-10.

Hawke’s Bay stepped it up a gear with West slipping through the Steamers defensive hold to close the gap to 10.

Only moments later the Steamers responded; a cleaver grubber kick from Delany found the hands of replacement number eight Jesse Parete to cross the line, with Delany adding the extras a Steamers victory was in sight.

With under 10 minutes to go, the Macrae-Shelford Bay Cup was secured with late tries from Webber and Parete delivering the Steamers first victory of the season.

Bay of Plenty 46 (Joe Webber 2, Jesse Parete 2, Siegfried Fisi'ihoi, Lalakai Foketi tries; Mike Delany 4 cons 2 pens, Luke Campbell con) Hawke's Bay 17 (Marino Mikaele Tu'u, Ihaia West tries; West 2 cons, pen). HT: 20-3
