Whakarewarewa Women’s coach Ron James is a strong believer in size doesn’t matter but power is essential especially when it comes to the front row.

He should know, because he’s got three pocket rockets causing all sorts of havoc to opposition front rows in the Baywide Women’s Club Rugby Competition.

James says what his front row lacks in height they more than make up for it in power and experience.

"We’ve got a fairly stocky, short but strong front row. The tight five work really well together. We haven’t got that much height but we’re doing pretty well. It’s just that experience.”

They have youngster Sarah Jane Taylor who James says doesn’t let too many props get the better of her.

"She’s come along really well. And with Lilly Florence at hooker and Janina Kahn the other prop they are a pretty dynamic team. They are a really good foundation for our team.”

All three have women have Volcanix experience but James says the team don’t just rely on their power when they are on the paddock.

"Last year we lacked a little bit in our front row. So having two props with the qualities that they bring to the team has definitely made a difference to our team.

"The whole pack is really starting to click at the moment. They understand what is required. It’s not just at the set piece too. They’re not just charge it up and bash it. They are using their vision and communication as well.”

Whaka host Waimana at Puarenga Park on Sunday at 1pm. Despite Waimana’s 58-12 loss to Rangiuru at the weekend. Waimana have plenty of experience of their own to call on.

"You always have to be weary of a wounded Waimana team. They will be looking to turn that game around. They won’t be holding back, they are a proud club and you have to give them the appropriate respect otherwise they will punish you.”

In the other matches of the round Rangiuru host Mount Maunganui at Centennial Park on Friday night. Kick-off is at 7pm.

Rotoiti will host Matata at Emery Park. The match gets underway at 1pm. Rangataua has the bye.
