Following fourteen weeks of secondary schools rugby comes to head this Saturday when the best from across the Bay of Plenty gather at Rugby Park in Whakatane for the Bethlehem Coachlines Finals Day.
The Under 15 Premier Boys and the 2nd XV Boys will kick off the day at 10.30am. Trident High School Under 15 will host Tauranga Boys College Under 15A. These two teams have been neck and neck throughout the competition. Both teams have big packs and exciting backlines with experienced coaches such as Brett Wharewera at Trident High School and Hamish Boyce with Tauranga Boys College this match promises to be an exciting open flowing affair. The difference may come down to the Trident High School having the local support in behind them.
The best in Secondary School Girls Rugby will also be on display when Tauranga Girls College take on rivals Rotorua Girls High School. The gap between these two teams has closed over the season with Rotorua Girls High School narrowly losing in the competition round. Not only is the Cay title up for grabs but the winner will also represent the Bay of Plenty in the National Top four playoffs versing Hamilton Girls High School.
Taupo Nui a Tia and Te Puke High School will come face to face in the Division Two 1st XV final. Te Puke’s only loss has been to Taupo Nui a Tia this season and they are keen to redeem themselves on the big stage this Saturday. Te Puke High School has been in sizzling form in the past two weeks and showed their class with an emphatic win over Tauhara College last week. Taupo on the other hand may be a little underdone having only played one game in four weeks. With a 12pm kick off its going to be a bruising encounter.
In division one the season finale will see the best team two teams all season renew their rivalry when Te Whare Kura o Mauao take on Western Heights High School.
Both teams are stacked with talent and their last encounter was a tough battle. With teams of contrasting styles the outcome will come down to the team who is able to execute their own game plan while making the least number of mistakes.
Western Heights High School showed their class by easily disposing of Rotorua Boys High School 2nd XV. They played a clinical and simple pattern of play which they executed flawlessly. Te Whare Kura o Mauao on the other hand faced a tough and determined Bethlehem College. While many thought this was going to be a walk over Te Whare Kura o Mauao had to battle to the end with the final score not reflecting the close nature of the game.
This tough and close match may make the difference for the tama toa o Mauao.
