The Bethlehem Coachlines Baywide Secondary Schools Championship reaches the halfway point this weekend.
With some surprise results on the weekend the battle for a top spot remains close after newly promoted John Paul College held Rotorua Boys’ High School 2nd XV to a draw while Eastern Bay power house defaulted to current champions Te Whare Kura o Mauao due to injuries and illness.
Bethlehem College hosts Rotorua Boys’ High School 2nd XV who are coming off a surprise draw to John Paul College. Bethlehem College was lucky to take the win against Aquinas College last week and will need to execute their game plan for the full 70 minutes if they want to topple the boys from Raukura. Kieran Botha will no doubt be smarting at last week’s surprise result and we can expect his boys to come firing on all cylinders this week as they look to secure a spot in the top four. A loss on Saturday will see Bethlehem College knock them out of the top four.
Aquinas College will again host at home taking on the champion Te Whare Kura o Mauao. Coach Kevin Schuler is under no illusions as to how tough the match will be but believes his boys have what it takes to make it a competitive match. Te Whare Kura o Mauao buoyed with the news that outstanding flanker Taitua Woller has been selected for the Chiefs U18 squad will be keen for a hit out after the default win last week.
Trident High School will have their first crack at the Te Kani Shield when Western Heights High School travel to Whakatane. Although depleted last week players are expected to return from concussion stand down and will prove a handful for the boys from Heights.
Opotiki College are taking the long road trip this week when the meet John Paul College. With a young Opotiki College team coming up against a well drilled and fit John Paul College team it is going to be a tough challenge for the young Opotiki College boys.
In Division two Tauhara College will have their work cut out for them when they travel to face Te Puke High School whom have a big slick team who has performed well all season. Taupo Nui a Tia the number one ranked team host Whakatane in what is expected to be a one sided affair.
Rotorua Lakes High School in Division three has the opportunity to topple the top ranked Rotorua Boys’ High School U15A team. With Lakes fielding a young team a well it promises to be the match of the third division.
