In wet conditions the Bay of Plenty Volcanix deservedly earned themselves a 10-all draw with Auckland this afternoon at Whakatane’s Rugby Park.
Within the first five minutes of the match things looked glum for the Volcanix following several early substitutions due to injury. Nevertheless the Volcnaix side held Auckland scoreless for twenty five minutes before last year’s Farah Palmer Cup runners up captain Karina Stowers crossed the line to score first.
As the rain continued the Volcanix team levelled the score with Auckland through loosehead prop Luka Connor. Following a collective effort from the forwards, Connor burrowed over the line to tie the match up going into the break at 5-all.
Teams returned from the break and again the Volcanix team applied pressure on a sizeable Auckland forward pack. Despite being reduced to fourteen players with flanker Lily Florence receiving a yellow card, the Volcanix team continued to deny the Aucklanders. However persistent attack from the visitors saw them in for their second try to take a 10-5 lead.
The Volcanix were not to be denied though as they stormed up field and were camped on the Auckland try line. With repetitive phases of play it was Volcanix hooker Ereti Williams who pounced on a loose ball to tie the game up 10-all. In what was the Volcanix’s best ever result over the visitors.
The Volcanix will play Hawke’s Bay in their second week of the Farah Palmer Cup in Napier next Saturday 9 September at Tremain Field kicking off at 12.00pm.
