This Thursday and Friday Mount Maunganui will be treated to an abundance of sevens rugby at the North Island Secondary Schools Sevens at Blake Park with a total of thirty five teams competing.
This year there are ten Under 15 boys’ teams with six making up the Under 15 boys’ open grade and four teams forming the Under 15 boys’ co-ed grade. There will be a total of twelve U15 girls’ teams, five of those teams will form the Under 15 girls’ open grade and the remaining seven will compete in the Under 15 girls’ development grade. In addition there will be nine Under 19 girls’ teams’ with four teams competing in the Under 19 development grade and five in the Under 19 open grade.
Last year’s title holders Hamilton Boys’ High School and Rotorua Girls’ High School will be back to defend their respective Under 15 boys’ and Under 15 girls’ grade. A new winner will be crowned for both the Under 19 girl’s open grade and development grade with Hamilton Girls’ High School and Green Bay College not in attendance. It is guaranteed to be an enjoyable two days as these teams can expect a tough challenge for their title.
Tournament Director Ian Parata says, “This is a great tournament featuring some fantastic young talent. It will be great for spectators to watch and I am sure they will continue to see the growth in these young athletes skill set as we do. We are confident this tournament will continue to be a high quality experience for all involved."
