At last night’s final Bay of Plenty Rugby Referees Baywide Meeting, the senior semi finals and finals referees for the Premier 1, Premier 2, Division 1, Premier 1 Development, Premier 2 Development, Division 2 and Baywide Womens competitions were released.
The appointments board, made up of Craig Reilly-Coaching Co-Ordinator, Tony Dunlop-Premier Panel Manager, John Donnelly-Interim B Panel Manager and Pat Rae-Referee Manager, selected the match officials after a series of robust discussions.
Jamie Bell has been selected to referee the final of the Baywide Premier 1 competition on Saturday 29 July.  Sam Fellows and Mate Samuels will be in control of the two semi finals.  Fellows will control the Mount Maunganui v Te Puke Sports match at Blake park, while Samuels will control the Rotoiti v Rangataua clash.  Fellows and Samuels will most likely be Bell’s assistant referees.
Referee Manager Pat Rae comments, “Our premier panel of referees have had a very successful 2017.  They have all worked extremely hard this year both as individuals but also as a premier squad to ensure they remained on top of their game.  Our Premier referees have to achieve very stringent criteria to be selected.  These include 18.1 in the dreaded YOYO fitness test and a minimum 70% law exam pass. They also put themselves through a rigorous self review system with their 1:1 coach overseeing the process each week usually on a Sunday or Monday night, once their video has been uploaded.”
Bell was selected by New Zealand Rugby into the High Performance’s “Wider Training Group.”  These eight referees from around the country will referee at this years Jock Hobbs Under 19 tournament in Taupo in September.
Rae further comments, “We are extremely proud of Jamie’s selection.  His growth, not only as a referee but also as a person has been tremendous.  Balancing a full time job, with full time study, all the while attempting to break into our national refereeing ranks has not been an easy feat.”
