Baywide Results Produce a Bit of Everything

Baywide section one rugby produced a bit of everything on Saturday (12 April 2008) – an upset result, a come from behind victory and total domination by the defending champions.

Mount Maunganui used its get out of jail card twice in the last five minutes of the game against Te Teko at Blake Park. With the clock ticking down the home side appeared headed for defeat, trailing by nine points.

A try to Simeon James, was followed by the Baywide leading try scorer Zane Butler crossing with full time showing on the clock, to give the Mount a 18-17 win. Te Teko could only stand and shake their heads about a victory that was snatched away.

The Eastern Bay local derby between Opotiki and Whakatane Marist caused a real surprise in the rugby follower’s ranks, with Opotiki over whelming Whakatane Marist 40-3. Playing with a home ground advantage, Opotiki took control early in the match, to lead by twenty-five points at the half time break.

One-way traffic was the order of the day at the Tauranga Domain - where Tauranga Sports went on a point a minute rampage against Te Puna to post an 81 nil victory. Thirteen tries to the Baywide premier champions suggests a team determined to grab back to back championship silverware.

The Tauranga forwards completely shut their opponents out of the encounter, with Tauranga having the game in the bag at the break, after posting 36 unanswered points. Todd Arnold and Luke Braid both picked up a brace of touchdowns, with Braid’s try coming with his first touch of the ball.

A battle of attrition took place at Te Ariki Park where Rotorua visitors Rotoiti just got past Rangataua 22-19. While Rotoiti registered three tries, Rangataua kicker Glen Strang kept the home side in the match, with four penalty goals.

Rotorua heavyweight Whakarewarewa posted a seven try 47-7 victory over Kahukura with Te Puke Sports strolling past Waikite 41-12.

In section two, Rangiuru have made their best start for a decade albeit in the second echelon, with a 22-13 win over fellow Western Bay side Arataki. Other teams to post victories were Papamoa, Greerton Marist, Poroporo, Ngongotaha and Kawerau.
