NIGHT RUGBY HIGHLIGHTS BAY RUGBY TROPHIES

The BOPRU Sub-Union representative series will be played under lights for the first time as the BOPRU attempts to be proactive in meeting the changing sporting demands from the community.

BOPRU Rugby Development Manager Mike Rogers says “We see the Sub Union Series as an opportunity to play mid week night rugby. We are well aware of the need to look at alternatives to the traditional weekend sport option as our society changes. The other advantage from playing the fixtures on a Wednesday night was to minimize impact on Baywide Club Rugby.”

The re-introduction of the Sub Union series was one of the real successes of Bay rugby last season. The Te Hurinui Apanui trophy was first contested in 1927 with the inaugural winner being the Rangitaiki Sub-Union.

In the inaugural contests last season Western Bay defeated Central 39-19 and Eastern Bay of Plenty 44-17 to claim the Te Huranui Apanui Shield. The Central Colts side were also dominant in the competition for the Shalfoon Shield overpowering Western Bay 33-5 and defeating Eastern Bay 28-14.

The Sub-Union games have a two-fold purpose. One of the objectives of the BOPRU Community Rugby Plan is to increase the profile and public interest of local competition rugby and the Shalfoon and Te Hurinui Shield fixtures are a great way of achieving this.

Another important outcome is that the matches are an opportunity for the Steamers and representative coaches, to identify potential players for BOP representative teams.

This year’s race for Bay of Plenty Sub-Union rugby supremacy kicks of this Wednesday (30 April 2008) night under lights in Taneatua. Eastern Bay of Plenty will host their Western Bay counterparts with the Colts encounter starting a 6pm and the senior game at 7.30pm.
