The Bay of Plenty Steamers face one of their biggest challenges of the season, in their first match of the 2010 ITM Cup, when they run on to Waikato Stadium to face Waikato on Saturday (31 July 2010) evening.
In the days before the National Provincial Championship was established in 1976, the biggest game of the season, was always the battle against the team from the other side of the Kaimai ranges.
The games between the long time archrivals always brings a intensity to the encounters, which few other Steamers games will match during the ITM Cup season.
Saturday evenings contest in Hamilton will be the 73rd meeting of the two sides, dating back to 1926. Waikato hold the ascendancy with 45 victories over the years, with the Bay of Plenty winning 23, and four matches drawn.
Last season at Baypark, Mount Maunganui the Steamers took control to post a 32-16 victory. A future of the game was the 22 points from the boot of Steamers All Black Mike Delany.
