WHAKAREWAREWA LEAD BAYWIDE SECTION ONE

Whakarewarewa cruised to the top of the Baywide section one point’s ladder on Saturday (3 May 2008) when they brushed aside the challenge from Te Puna.

In an eight try romp the visitors to Maramatanga Park were always in control to take out the game 52-14. Hayden Baird and Trent Vatselias led the way for Whaka with two touchdowns apiece, with the ever reliable Kelly Haimona kicking six conversions.

While Te Puna were playing catch-up all game against the 2006 Baywide champions they did cross for two tries. Nicholas Mair and Tapene Mika scored a try apiece with Richie Earl kicking the conversions.

At the Murray Salt Stadium in Te Puke – Tauranga Sports rebounded from their first defeat of the season to run away from Te Puke Sports 46-6. In a fairly even first half the defending Baywide titleholders took a reasonably narrow 15-6 lead into the break.

In the second spell Tauranga Sports cut loose running in six tries. Sprinting into the back line from fullback Toby Arnold grabbed three tries. Eruera Haimona playing at first five distributed the ball with finesse - and kicked four conversions and a penalty goal.

Rotoiti, who took an unbeaten record into their clash with Mount Maunganui, tasted defeat with the Mount grabbing a thriller 18-14. The visitors to Emery Park made the early running leading 10 nil at the break. A fight back from Rotoiti saw them get within four points (and take a bonus point from the game).

A relieved Rangataua trekked from Te Ariki Park after claiming a one-point victory over Opotiki. The home side appeared to have the match in the bag with a fifteen point advantage with five minutes remaining

Two storming charges from Opotiki resulted in Reece Simpson and Te Rau Kurei crossing for tries, with Sam Howe slotting the conversion attempts. A 26-25 final score line told the tale of a game that Rangataua nearly let slip away.

In other section one encounters Te Teko posted their first win of the season defeating Waikite 35-20 - with Kahukura nailing their fourth victory of the season beating Whakatane Marist 26-17

While Greerton Marist remained unbeaten in section two, they did it by the skin of their teeth, getting home from Judea 22-19. A seventeen-point lead to Greerton disappeared in the second spell before they sneaked past a brave Judea team.

Former Baywide heavyweights Rangiuru and Ngongotaha both posted victories defeating Reporoa and Poroporo respectively. Papamoa surprised by the margin of the 32-7 victory over Kawerau with Paroa and Marist St Michaels also banking win points.

A real battle between the Tauranga Sports and Te Puke Sports Colts took place. With both teams entering the match with an unbeaten record there was a battle of attrition before Te Puke Sports prevailed 29-26
