The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union is pleased to announce the signing of New Zealand Sevens Players, Zar Lawrence and Nigel Hunt for the 2008 Air New Zealand Cup.

Both are proven competitors as shown by their performances on a demanding International Sevens circuit. Their experience of playing under pressure at the top level will help bring a level of consistency and leadership to the Steamers in 2008.

Lawrence, (26) has been a member of the New Zealand Sevens team since 2005 and has played 21 Air New Zealand Cup games for North Harbour. Lawrence has played centre, wing and fullback at Air NZ Cup level.

Hunt, (24) has been a member of the New Zealand Sevens team since 2005 and has been a member of the Wellington Lions since 2004, playing 9 Air New Zealand Cup games. Hunt has been halfback behind Piri Weepu and Alby Matheson in Wellington while also having the ability to play middle field and wing.

“We have had our eye on Nigel for the past couple of seasons after watching him score 5 tries against our Development team while playing on the wing”. Steamers Head Coach Herb Schuler stated.

“As New Zealand Sevens Players, Nigel and Zar bring an x-factor to our team that I am sure will excite our supporters,” Steamers Head Coach Herb Schuler stated. “Both players have the ability to play a number of backline positions, this give us options of how we can best display their considerable talents under the new rules” Schuler stated.
