Whakarewarewa Win Local Rotorua Derby

May 19

The top of the table Baywide section one clash, between Rotorua heavyweights Whakarewarewa and Rotoiti, resulted in a decisive six-try victory to Whaka. A 22-3 score line at the half time break was extended in the second half with the competition leaders waltzing home 46-9.

Kelly Haimona broke the hundred points for the season mark with a try, five conversions and two penalties. Other try scorers for Whaka were Paula Asaeli, Wayne Hughson, Aliki Kisina, Teu Nafe and Siegfried Fishiihoi. All the Rototiti points came from penalty goals, with Whakataki Cunningham booting home two, and Glen Martin one.

Tauranga Sports, who are sitting in second place on the point’s ledger, had a real struggle with Opotiki in the Eastern Bay. The home side played with real pride and passion in front of their parochial supporters, with the Opotiki forwards dominating much of the encounter.

The Tauranga side picked up their game in the last quarter and came from behind to take out the match 17-16. Tauranga fullback Toby Arnold, who leads the Baywide try scoring stakes, added another two touchdowns to his season tally.

Te Puke Sports consolidated their position in the top six with a commanding 63-10 win, over Kahukura. While the game was relatively even in the first spell - Te Puke cut loose in the final quarter to run in five tries. Te Puke fullback Brett McLeod had an outstanding match scoring a try and kicking six conversions and two penalty goals.

Mount Maunganui, had to withstand real pressure from Rangataua, in the closing minutes of the game before getting home 18-11. The encounter was very tight before Colin Bourke crossed for the Mounts third touch down.

Te Teko posted their third successive victory defeating Whakatane Marist 32-10, while Te Puna had to withstand a grandstand finish from Waikite, before grabbing the game 31-27.

The surprise in section two was competition leaders Greerton Marist being held to a 13 all draw by Papamoa. Ngongotaha continued on their winning way with a hard fought victory over Kawerau 25-12.

Other second echelon teams to post victories were Rangiuru, Arataki, Paroa, and Reporoa.

While the result will show that the Mount Maunganui Colts clung on to their undefeated record against Rangataua - the game went down to the wire before the Mount emerged victorious 13-8. Greerton Marist sprung a minor surprise beating Tauranga Sports 8-3 in a real arm wrestle.

Thames Valley team Hauraki North upset Under 19 competition leaders Opotiki 21 nil.
