Winner “Take All” Match at Kuirau Park

June 5

A winner take all contest will take centre stage this Saturday (7 June 2008) in a Baywide section one rugby match.

With the eight starters in the Baywide premier championship confirmed at the final whistle on Saturday – the section one encounter at Kuirau Park, has everything at stake for the two participants.

Opotiki and Kahukura, who sit in eight and ninth place on the point’s ladder entering the contest, have a simple agenda on Saturday. Win - and take a place in the premier championship.

However there are a number of different scenarios that will decide the last two places in the top eight. Victory for Te Teko (sitting in seventh position) over Te Puke would guarantee the Eastern Bay side a top echelon berth, with a place still likely with defeat.

If the eighth position is locked up at the final whistle on Saturday – calculators will come into play, with who beat whom, then for and against points if necessary, being the decider.

While both competition leaders Whakarewarewa, and Rangataua are safely in the premier championship round, there is plenty at stake at Puarenga Park. A Whaka victory will see the team wrap up first round trophy for the second successive year.

There is also a lot at stake in the Western Bay local derby between Tauranga Sports and Mount Maunganui. Along with plenty of pride, the Jordan Cup (Western Bay Sub-Union challenge trophy) will be on the line. In May last year Tauranga Sports relieved the Mount of the prestigious piece of silverware.

In other section one encounters Whakatane Marist will host Waikite with Te Puna meeting Rotoiti.

While the top four in section two, who will win promotion to the Baywide division one title race, were confirmed last weekend - there will be plenty of pride to play for this weekend.

Greerton Marist, who were beaten for the first time (by Ngongotaha) last weekend, will be looking to get back on the winning track against Kawerau. Second placed Rangiuru should be too good for Poroporo, while Ngongotaha and Arataki who round out the top four, will also be favoured to win.

Western Bay teams dominate the Baywide Colts competition, holding five of the top six positions. Competition leaders Mount Maunganui will be heavily favoured to extend their undefeated record against Waikite, at Blake Park.

A match with plenty at stake is the match-up between Whakarewarewa and Greerton Marist who are locked together in fourth place.
