Bay of Plenty Rugby Cancels Community Sevens Events

Last Friday 22nd October, the Government announced its new COVID-19 Protection Framework, a new flexible 3-level approach (Green, Orange & Red) to managing COVID-19 in the community.  This new framework will eventually replace the current alert level restriction Framework

During this announcement, the Government indicated that the Auckland region would remain at Alert Level 3 until it’s three DHB’s had reached a double vaccination rate of 90%. It did not foresee there being a change in alert levels to the rest of New Zealand or a movement to the new protection framework until at least the end of November.

Given that the current Alert Level 2 restrictions in place at community sport events limits gatherings to 100 people and participants, our sevens events would exceed this number. The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union is left with no alternative but to cancel its four scheduled Community Sevens events for 2021.

Cancelled Events

Baywide Secondary Schools Girls Sevens Wednesday 3rd November 2021

Baywide Secondary School Boys Sevens Wednesday 10th November 2021

Baywide Senior Club Sevens Saturday 13th November 2021

Baywide Youth Club Sevens Saturday 20th November 2021

The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union explored a number of ways in which it could safely host some/any of these events within the current level 2 restrictions, but unfortunately, was unable to find a practical way of safely delivering alternatives while maintaining the integrity of the events.

Community Capability Manager Lisa Appert comments, “We are all bitterly disappointed with having to make this announcement.  The team is well aware that a large contingent of our club and secondary school community have been working extremely hard since the end of their 15’s season on assembling 7-a-side teams together for their upcoming 7’s season.  The new Youth Club Sevens tournament was especially exciting because it generated excitement within our clubs to re-engage with their former junior players now attending secondary school to come back and don the club colours again.  All entry fee levies paid to date will of course be refunded.”

Appert continues, “Because there’s been such effort and energy put in by our community, we’d like to extend to any of them the opportunity to run their own “MINI TOURNAMENT” at their club or school over the next 4 weeks.”

Appert continues, “We will be producing a 1-page FACT SHEET for any of our clubs and schools considering running their own mini-tournament to assist and guide them through such considerations as team number restrictions to keep the gathering limit to under 100 and writing their own Covid-19 Level 2 Safety Plan.  The BOPRU will also offer support to any club or school in writing these safety plans, some tournament administration support and match balls.”

With this announcement effectively ending the sevens season for 2021, the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union is currently exploring options for a stand-alone community sevens window in February 2022.  Appert continues, “In March 2022, we are hosting the Te Ika A Maui North Island Secondary Schools Sevens on the 27th and 28th March 2022 so it makes sense to go back to all of our clubs and explore whether there is any interest in reinvigorating our two cancelled club sevens tournaments in February 2022.”
