Volcanix captain Christie Yule says she is excited with the balance of experience and youth that has been selected for this year’s Farah Palmer Cup.

“It’s probably evenly balanced this year, which is good, and the youth certainly provides a lot of passion and enthusiasm that keeps the more experienced players younger.”

The 27-year-old says, players like; Jade Una Tuilaepa, Sapphire Tapsell, Kelsie Wills and Layla Te Riini will be names to keep a close eye on this season.

“There are some really good young girls coming through with such skill and game-reading ability, that I can’t wait to get out on the field with them.”

Black Ferns captain, Les Elder has been named in the Volcanix squad, but with the openside flanker suffering an injury at the weekend, Yule says she will look to her experienced players such as Kendra Reynolds, Baye Jacob, Janina Khan, Natalie Delamere and Renee Wickliffe to help lead the younger players through the season.

Volcanix head coach Rodney Gibbs, used a pre-season match against Hawke’s Bay at the weekend, to give his players a taste of what to expect for their season opener against Counties Manukau, at Tauranga Domain, on August 31, at 2.35pm.

“The hit-out was really important, playing three 30-minute halves was awesome. Most players got 60-minutes under their belt. It gave them some real solid game time. I think we made some progress, but we’ve still got plenty to do.”
