Bay of Plenty men’s and women’s sides have given themselves every chance of claiming the TECT National Sevens’ title today.

Bay Men’s had two impressive wins from their pool matches with debutant Peni Lasaqa impressive, on day one of the two-day tournament, showing blistering pace and strong off-loading skills. Equally impressive was Matthew Skipwith-Garland, who showed his elusive pace and stepping skills to bamboozle would-be tacklers, not only to set up scoring opportunities for his team mates but for himself as well.

The Men’s team won their first up match against Manawatu 35-14 and their second game against Harbour 23-12, but lost 22-12 to Taranaki. They will take on Hawke’s Bay in the Cup quarter-final number 3 at 12.10pm tomorrow.

Auckland and last year’s champions Tasman will play-off in quarter-final number 1, Taranaki will go up against Southland in quarter-final number 2 and Waikato and Canterbury play each other in quarter-final 4.

Bay of Plenty Women’s coach Victoria Grant will be pleased with her young side, who showed they were comfortable on a national stage. Mariah Ririnui showed her blistering pace, often leaving her opponents grasping at thin air. Kendra Reynolds showed her tough aggressive style of play in the 15-aside-game, suits the seven-a-side-game as well.

Grant’s side won two of their three pool matches, losing first up to Otago 17-12. But in their other two hit-outs, they showed they are a side to be wary of, by beating North Harbour 36-7 and Auckland 17-12.

The women’s team go up against Wellington in quarter final number 2 at 10.25am tomorrow. In the other quarter-finals Counties Manukau face Canterbury, Auckland play last year’s champions Manawatu and Waikato play Otago.

In the women’s Bowl semi-finals Hawkes Bay go up against Taranaki and Tasman play North Harbour. The men’s Bowl quarter-final sees Counties Manukau play South Canterbury, North Harbour play Thames Valley, Wellington face Manawatu and Otago play Wairarapa Bush.
