Field Test:
The next step in gaining your credits is to referee a minimum of three rugby matches involving either primary school, intermediate or even high school students. This could be 15's, Sevens, or even Rip Rugby/Rippa.

You'll be coached by a referee coach while you put into practice what you’ve learned in the classroom.

Here's what some of our previous course attendees have said about the course!

At the conclusion of the field test all successful course participants are invited to become registered referees and ply their new qualification on Saturdays. We don’t want to take students away from playing. If you’re playing for your club or school, DON’T STOP!!! We work around your current playing schedule and look at ways of getting you “in the middle” when you’re not playing.

A great example of this was former Trident High student, Flynn Butler. Flynn was a Year 12 student from Trident High School and played for their 1st XV. Looking to improve his on field law knowledge, Flynn joined our programme in 2015 and after completing the course, he became a registered referee, refereeing under 14 games on Saturday mornings when his playing schedule allowed.

Flynn’s playing season progressed side by side with his refereeing. In July Flynn referee’ed at the 2015 Tai Mitchell Tournament held in Whakatane. Here he was given intensive referee coaching over consecutive days and made huge strides.

His playing season culminated in being selected for the Bay of Plenty Under 16 representative team and to cap off his stellar season, Flynn won the Bay of Plenty Rugby Referees “Most Improved 1st Year Referee”.

This programme will cost you NOTHING except two days of your time and your willingness to work hard and learn how to be a better rugby player by learning how to be a referee and give back.
