Whakarewrewa Crowned 2011 BOP Club 7s Champions

Rotorua Club Whakarewarewa, won the Bay of Plenty Rugby Sevens played at Maramatanga Park Te Puna on Saturday (3 December 2011), defeating Western Bays Hangarau (Bethlehem) 21-15 in the championship final.

Malaysian visitors Sabah State, who have been training in the Western Bay of Plenty for the previous three weeks, saw their number one team reach the under 14 final.

Hangarau who are based in nearby Bethlehem, and have a close affinity with the Te Puna Rugby Club, caused the upset of the tournament in the semi-finals. Facing tournament favourites Rotoiti, the Western Bay team made the final stanza after despatching their Rotorua rivals 12-5.

Whakarewarewa made the championship decider, when they overcame the Fijian flare of Marist St Michaels, who surprised with their impressive showing in pool play. In the final encounter that was up for grabs throughout, Whaka annexed the Bay of Plenty Club Rugby sevens title, getting home 21-15. The Plate competition wsa taken out by Rangiuru who posted a solid 37-5 victory over Mount Maunganui.

While the Malaysian number one side were defeated 30-7, by a slick St Kentigern College side in the Under 14 championship - the two Sabah State sides showed the benefit of the three weeks training in the Western Bay of Plenty. In pool play the Malaysian number one team, defeated hosts Te Puna 12-5 before overpowering Tauranga Sports 38-12.

Rotorua Boys High Clean Sweep @ 7s

As 12 secondary school sevens teams converged on Western Heights High School for the 2011 BOPSS 7s Tournament some would have predicted overall winners for each grade. 8 teams entered into the U19 competition while the U15 was fought out between 4 teams.

The saying goes, 'The first game is always the hardest was true to it's word as top ranked sides scrapped through. It was history in the making for Bethlehem College (BC) who were participating in their first ever 7s tournament. Playing on the regional stage means competing against the regions best, step up Rotorua Boys High School (RBHS).

Size & speed was always going to be a factor but now one would have predicted BC camping inside RBHS 22m for the first 6min. As cruel as sevens the first try could have been to the underdogs but RBHS went the full length and the flood gates opened.Tauranga Boys College (TBC) ranked 2nd looked strong, lead by play maker and player to watch TeAhi Toma. Being coached by former New Zealand Sevens fitness freak Hayden Reid they looked dangerous all day and a real challenger for the title.

The U15 competition saw 4 teams play round robin play, and the top 2 teams playing off for the championship. This was RBHS and Mt Maunganui College (MC). It was a close in pool play but the 3 games took its toll on players and RBHS eased away with a 31-5 final result.

To the U19 top 4, hosts Western Heights High School (WHHS) were clinical all day and played out a traditional rivalry vs RBHS. Again it took the second half for RBHS to pull away and win 21-0. WHHS coach Ross Martin (another former New Zealand Sevens player) was happy with the boys efforts and encouraged them to carry on with the game and participate in the up coming U18 BOP Club 7s tournament.Opotiki (Opo) were all flare in their semi final against TBC and narrowly went down 19-12. The team were left wondering, as they cam so close to their first 7s final.

Onto the Championship Finale, RBHS got off to a quick lead, 17-0 at the break. With each half now 10min the TBC clawed there way back within 7 points and ran out of time to leave RBHS the 2011 BOPSS 7s Champions. This team will go onto the BNZ National Condor 7s Tournament in Auckland on Sunday December 4th. We wish them all the best and know that this tournament has been a great build up to achieving their goal of National Champions.

U19 Placings: 1st- RBHS, 2nd- TBC, 3rd-WHHS, 4th-Opo, 5th-TPHS, 6th-BC, 7th Katikati, 8th: JPC
U15 Placings: 1st- RBHS, 2nd- MC, 3rd- TNA, 4th-TPHS

BOPSS 7s Tournament Draw

Excitement is in the air as teams have been finalised for this weekend BOPSS Sevens Tournament. 14 teams will participate in the newest Olympic sport, Sevens Rugby. Held at Western Heights High School 14 teams from across the Bay region will compete for the U19 Boys, U15 Boys and U19 Girls championships.

The U19 Boys grade is headed by Rotorua & Tauranga Boys respectively while Opotiki and Western Heights will no doubt cause some disruption to the predictions. In the U15 Boys grade Rotorua Boys feature again with Mt College no doubt keen to measure themselves against one of the regions finest.

The U19 Girls grade has only two teams of Opotiki & Taupo Nui-A-Tia who wil play a best of 3 series throughout the day. This is exciting times for female rugby as there is a Bay of Plenty senior women sevens team competing at the Provincial Sevens tournament early next year in Mt Maunganui.

The Need for Speed

With Bay of Plenty Secondary School teams gearing up for thier first taste of summer sevens many players are starting to realise just how different the game really is.

Not only are players required to be a little bit fitter, the structure of the game is totally different to what many players are used too. Having speed is a great assest and no doubt there will be a display of athletes with plenty of speed to burn throughout the tournament. What is more important though is the need for speed throughout the whole game.

Repeative speed is a key component and enables players to sprint at maximum speed several times throughout a game of sevens. This requires some good base fitness work and repeated speed sessions, such as 10 x 40m sprints every 30seconds.

Try the below repeated speed work out:

1. 3 x 100m sprint every 1min
2. 4 x 50m sprint every 1min
3. 6 x 22m sprints every 30sec
4. 8 x 10m sprints every 30sec

Bay of Plenty Club Sevens Program

With Rugby Sevens now an official Olympic sport, countries all over the world is starting their Sevens programs aiming at developing talent for the biggest sporting stage.

The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union are taking the initiative to establish more opportunities for our rugby community to also get involved and be part of the Sevens game. With strong connections with the national New Zealand Sevens team and Mt Maunganui being the spiritual home of the Sevens program it is timely that we take advantage of this and position ourselves to be at the forefront of Sevens development within New Zealand.

Big aspirations starts with small steps and for 2011 we have targeted establishing a tournament in each sub union for all affiliate clubs to participate in. These will be run throughout the month of November which will provide talent identification opportunities for our senior men and women’s coaches that will be preparing for their respective campaigns for 2011/12 Sevens season.

The U14/U18 grades will provide an exciting opportunity for clubs to recruit or re-connect with their teenage players. The women grade is a potential launching platform for those players wanting to aim for higher honors and start on their pathway to regional, national honors and ultimately the biggest sporting stage the Olympics 2016.
