The Bay of Plenty Volcanix Head Coach Brendon Webby and Assistant Coaches Zane Winslade and Mike Lewis have announced today their Mitre 10 Farah Palmer Cup Squad for 2017.
The Bay of Plenty Volcanix proudly sponsored by Harvey Norman and supported by TotalCom, is a youthful side, which fosters the development and growth of women’s rugby in the Bay of Plenty. The team will kick off their Mitre 10 Farah Palmer Cup season on Saturday 2 September in Whakatane against Premiership side Auckland Storm.
Volcanix coach Brendon Webby commented on the team selection, "We have selected a young side but is boosted by a couple of experienced heads. It has been great to see the development of the Baywide Women’s Club Rugby competition, credit to the club coaches in this space for their support with the development of the women’s game.”
Webby finishes, “We have already started working on building a positive environment for the Volcanix with a great bunch of committed girls. We are very much looking forward to the season ahead and believe our squad will proudly represent Bay of Plenty and hope to see some great support from the community.”
Bay of Plenty Rugby Union Women’s Development Officer Lesley Elder commented, “There have been some exciting things happening with our Women’s High Performance Programme this year; from the increased involvement in the strength and conditioning space to the inclusion of education days, covering everything from the fundamentals of rugby to mental skills. We believe we are providing the best possible opportunity for our players to strive for selection into the national squads. The Mitre 10 Farah Palmer Cup is another opportunity for us to continue to grow our players and expose them to some great fifteen aside rugby.”
The Bay of Plenty Volcanix 2017 Farah Palmer Cup Championship Draw presents a number of exciting match ups including two key rivalry matches between our neighbouring teams.
After kicking their season off against Auckland, the Volcanix will head down the line to Hawke’s Bay to contest in the Battle of the Bays match. The side will return home to face North Harbour at Rotorua International Stadium in week three and will remain at home to host Tasman in a televised curtain raiser match ahead of the Bay of Plenty Steamers Mitre 10 Cup match against Counties Manukau.
The Volcanix final round robin fixtures are scheduled away with their first against neighbouring rivals Waikato on Saturday 30 September and second against Otago in their second televised curtain raiser match ahead of the Steamers clash against Otago.
The final week of round robin matches will be a bye week for the side before the Championship enters into play offs with semi-finals and finals scheduled for Saturday 21 and 28 October.
