Last weekend’s Toi Ohomai Baywide Secondary Schools competition saw John Paul College 1st XV play the only unbeaten team, Te Puke High School, in their first Division encounter, with the Te Kani Shield up for grabs.

The game started with all the boys from the assembled John Paul College teams performing a stirring haka to challenge the holders of the Te Kani Shield.

An early try from Te Puke High School saw John Paul College bounce back to a 7 – 5 lead.

Another try, followed by the trusty boot of Russell Macken, put all the score board pressure back onto Te Puke High School, especially with a 45m penalty to keep Te Puke High School under pressure.

Going into the halftime at 20 – 5 up, the game was not over by any means. Stern words at half time for both teams ensured the second half was going to be a competitive affair.

Te Puke High School had the run of the half, however great defence from John Paul College held them out. A late flurry from John Paul College saw them end with a try and winning 33 – 12 taking the Te Kani Shield for the first time ever.

Standout performances from the loose trio of Patrick Humphrey, Connor Humphries and Ethan Graham set a great foundation for the team to build their victory on. This week, John Paul College take the shield on the road to Whakatane where Trident High School will be itching to regain this prized trophy - which they held only weeks ago.

Te Puke High School square up against Aquinas College boosted by a win over Taupo Nui a Tia.

With a big mobile loose forward trio, Aquinas College will need to be in top form to contain a bruised Te Puke High School team who are keen to redeem their loss of the Te Kani Shield.

Western Heights High School will take on the depleted Taupo Nui a Tia team struggling with injuries. After a narrow loss to Aquinas College, Taupo Nui a Tia, if at full strength, will prove more than a match for Western Heights who looking forward to a rematch with John Paul College in the finals.

Tauhara College in Division Two are now clear of the pack after a convincing win over Otumoetai College. With a big road trip to Opotiki, Tauhara College will need all their team to be firing when they take the field, not only against the Opotiki College 1st XV, but the vocal home crowd supporters keen to see their boys take another home win.
