With two rounds of the Toi Ohomai Secondary Schools Competition under way teams are settling in and preparing for the top spots to win the Dick Little John Trophy.

Three teams are locked in at the top of the table with last year’s champions Te Wharekura o Mauao leading thanks to bonus points while Rotorua Boys’ High School 2nd XV are tied equal with Western Heights High School.

Western Heights is the surprise package with a young and inexperienced team.  They have accounted for Tauranga Boys’ College 2nd XV and The Rotorua Boys Barbarians’ team.  Today they host Te Wharekura O Mauao current holders of the Te Kani Shield and both teams will be desperate to take honour associated with that Trophy.

The two Boys Colleges go head to head this week with both their 1st and 2nd XV taking the field in a traditional exchange. Tauranga boys will be desperate for a win to hold on their place in the Division One competition in 2019.

Trident High School will host the Rotorua Boys Barbarian’s and after a close loss to their 2nd XV this will prove to be an exciting match in Whakatane.

In our Girls Baywide Premier 1st XV three teams are looking good as contenders this year with Te Wharekura o Mauao looking like an improved package on last season.  After a solid win over Te Puke High School, the girls from Mauao went down to Rotorua Girls High School in a heavy loss which was not helped with a large number of players unavailable.

Tauranga Girls College had a close win over arch rivals Rotorua Girls’ High School last week and comfortable win over Taupo Nui a Tia in Taupo. Meanwhile the Te Puke High School girls have a long road trip ahead to take Opotiki College and that promises to be an exciting free flowing match for both teams.
In the Baywide second Division Te Puke High School continue on their steady rise and with consistent form they look ready and able to make the move to the first Division.  Their sportsman ship and team culture is a real credit to the entire school and sports staff at Te Puke High School.
