History

Bill Sparks is a real rugby gentleman. The award was initiated in 2017 following his passing, and first presented by his son Ben. Bill was a life member of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union and a long serving member of the Bay of Plenty Referees.

This trophy was carved by referee Mate Samuels to recognize the services to Bay of Plenty refereeing by Bill Sparks. It is a ‘Koruru’ which sits at the apex of a Marae. The ‘Koruru’ represents a significant chief. Bill Sparks was a chief in his own right and an absolute gentleman. It is fitting to have a ‘Koruru’ to acknowledge this great man. This award is for the best assistant referee in the Premier Mens competition. It is voted on by the Premier Mens Referees.
