Bay of Plenty Toa Squad Selected for 2022

30 of the Bay of Plenty's finest young talent have been selected for the Toa squad for 2022.

The Toa offers representative opportunities to our best U19 and 20s talent as they participate in a Chiefs quadrangular tournament before an exhibition match vs a Blues region team.

"Most of the squad came through our club system while training with the Toa wider training squad over the winter," says Head of Player Development James Porter.

"As we've finished our club season, the squad has been cut down to 30 players."

Players will get to put their hand up for Chiefs 20s and NZ 20s representative opportunities off the back of their Toa campaign and potential positions in the Bay of Plenty Rugby Athlete Development Programme.

The ADP is the Bay of Plenty's high-performance programme. With nine players already rostered from the current Toa squad, Porter says they hope to develop more ADP calibre players through Toa.

"The great thing about the Toa campaign is that it may unearth talent we weren't aware of. We could see a few community-based boys enter the ADP and the end of the season, which is exciting for Bay rugby."

"This team is our first chance to see talent that's headed to the provincial level. It's a really important team for recruitment and retention."

Bay of Plenty Toa head coach John Haynes-Dodd says he is looking forward to participating in the campaign.

"I am looking forward to being a part of a rep program that gives these boys the chance to play a higher level of footy, wear the Bay colours and try to impress and push their case for higher honours."

"Pretty much all of the group is homegrown Bay talent, so it will be great to see how we stack up with the rest of the Chiefs region. For the players that stand out, there are possibilities to go into NZ 20s Chiefs 20s, as well as the Steamers."

A playing 23 will be named each week for the Bay of Plenty Toa, with their first game scheduled next Saturday August 13th, vs Counties Manukau Under 19s/20s.
