Rugby World Cup Match Official Estelle Whaiapu encourages Girls & Women to pick up the whistle

Celebrating Success - Estelle Whaiapu represents Bay of Plenty Rugby Referees at RWC2021

Rugby World Cup 2021 played in 2022 got underway in the weekend (8th/9th October), and anyone who was there, saw the broadcast, or heard anything of the two days in Auckland and Whangārei would no doubt agree that it has so far been a resounding success!

A less obvious component of the two days, but critical to the success, was the smooth operation behind the scenes on the sidelines.

Estelle, who has been a referee for 6 years, has risen to officiate at the pinnacle World Rugby event. She shows that a willingness to learn, take opportunities, grow and serve the game can lead to recognition and success.

Estelle was selected as Sideline Manager, a role she was appointed to for the weekend's South Africa/France and Australia/New Zealand RWC matches at Eden Park.

She will be back in that role on Sunday 16th in Waitākere with the Italy/Canada and Wales/New Zealand matches, then again on Saturday 22nd in Whangārei with the Australia/Wales and New Zealand/Scotland matches. Be sure to keep an eye out for her sailing the ship on the sideline!

In Bay of Plenty this season, we had 1667 female rugby players out of total of 9078 (18.36%). However, we only had 3 registered female referees out of a total of 89 (3.37%). This disparity in particular highlights the need to Serve the Game and Serve the Community through driving and supporting female referee recruitment.

We have so many great opportunities to get involved at any level, in any part of the province. If you or anyone you know anyone who is keen to pick up the whistle and learn, get in touch with our Junior Referee Manager Jamie Bell jamie@boprugby.co.nz

We will provide you with all the support and guidance you need to get underway with your refereeing journey! Players in particular (past and present) are especially encouraged!

Shortly in Term 4, Rippa Modules will be kicking off all across the Bay, This is a great intro to refereeing, a nice bit of pocket money, and also works really well for those who are busy playing throughout the winter season. Contact Jamie for more info (including Eastern Bay Modules), or sign up here - Central Bay Modules - Western Bay Modules

PLUS! Just announced from NZ Rugby - a new Women's Referee scholarship programme aimed at current /recent players. Click here for full details!
