Two major tournaments are offered within the Bay of Plenty to provide opportunities for local, national and international secondary school students to participate in rugby sevens and rip rugby.
As the Home of sevens rugby Mt Maunganui will host Te Ika a Maui rugby 7's tournament. In 2021 this event will be held from Monday March 22nd to Wednesday March 24th. This is a Schools Sport NZ sanctioned event and will be run over 3 days during summer tournament week.
Overseas Schools are welcome to attend but cannot win the North Island Schools title.
In 2021 this event will be held on Tuesday 23rd March and Wednesday March 24th.
Rip Rugby is looking to provide students opportunities to experience the game in a safe and positive experience.
It has been designed to give teenagers a taste of the game without the "tackle/contact" component. All the rules of rugby 7's apply and in 2021 rip rugby teams will be able to compete in a festival tournament along side their rugby 7 school mates.
This tournament will be held in term 4 with an exact day yet to be confirmed.
Schools will compete for the Bay 7's Championship title and qualification to the National 7's. This event is split over two days with U14 (boys only) & U15 grades playing on day one and the U18 grades and Rip Rugby playing on day two.
Schools from outside the Bay of Plenty may attend to compete in the 7's or Rip Rugby event but cannot win the Bay title.
